Clients’ Design Objective:
To transform this small kitchen to accommodate both cozy family meals and entertaining large groups.
The Challenge:
In expanding the kitchen by six feet, we had to overcome the problem of a bearing post at the edge of the new kitchen plan.
The Solution:
We incorporated the bearing post as an architectural column to the left of a built-in banquette and placed a matching decorative column on the right for balance and continuity. A favorite table and upholstered chairs created an intimate space for dining. Because the kitchen was relatively dark, we relocated the main sink to the corner by two large windows to take advantage of the natural light. The red antique finished island houses a cabinet with a mixer lift, wine chiller, prep sink, and casual seating for three. The matching buffet provides storage space and an upper display cabinet for collectibles. The beautifully curved hood with Enkeboll moldings anchors the room.
